San Francisco, CA – In another seismic leadership shift, OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman announced he will be leaving the prominent artificial intelligence lab. This closely follows the dismissal of CEO Sam Altman by the OpenAI board earlier this week.
Brockman, who also served as president and chairman, had initially stated that he would remain at OpenAI in a reduced role following Altman’s ouster. But in a surprise decision, Brockman has now chosen to completely leave the company he co-founded with Altman in 2015.
In a post on social media, Brockman expressed his pride in OpenAI’s achievements over the past eight years, including advanced AI models such as GPT-3 and DALL-E. Ultimately, however, he felt it was time to leave
“I believe the team will continue to do important work and I continue to wish them the best.”
Brockman’s departure caps a tumultuous week for OpenAI, which began with the board abruptly firing high-profile CEO Sam Altman. Their decision was based on frustrations with Altman’s transparency and communication.
With both founders out, OpenAI faces a leadership vacuum even as it looks to commercialize its powerful AI technologies.
Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati will serve as interim CEO, bringing extensive expertise in AI research. The board has also initiated a formal search process for a permanent new CEO.
During his time at OpenAI, Brockman led the development of initiatives such as OpenAI Gym, a toolkit for training reinforcement learning algorithms. He also led OpenAI Five, which in 2019 became the first AI system to beat professional esports players.
While OpenAI’s board expressed confidence in continuing the company’s mission, Brockman’s unforeseen departure leaves uncertainty about the future direction of the influential AI lab. As competition in artificial intelligence research increases worldwide, OpenAI now finds itself at a philosophical crossroads without one of its original leaders at the helm.
