How to use Midjourney AI Alpha
Access to Midjourney Alpha
If you’ve already generated more than 10,000 images on Midjourney via Discord, you can probably access the Alpha website at alpha.midjourney.com. Just go to that URL and log in with your Discord credentials.
If you haven’t reached that image limit on Discord yet, you can request access to the Alpha by becoming a member Waiting list halfway through the trip. Slots open regularly as Midjourney expands server capacity.
Once you sign in, you’ll see a clean, elegant interface that allows you to start generating AI images.
Enter your first text prompt
The main prompt bar is located at the top of the Alpha interface. Click the plus sign next to the “Imagine” text to open a text field.
Here you enter text prompts, just like you would in Discord. For example, you can enter:
An astronaut riding a horse on Mars, digital artText prompts let you tap into Midjourney’s imagination and specify exactly what you want to illustrate with it. You can be as vague or detailed as you want.
Once you’ve entered your prompt, press Enter or click the Generate button next to the text field. Midjourney is starting to work its magic!
Configure your picture settings
On the right side of the screen you will see a section called ‘Settings’ with an icon that looks like dials. Click to open the Visual Settings panel.
This allows you to configure aspects such as:
- Aspect ratio: Square, portrait, landscape or automatic
- Mate: Small, medium or large image generation
- Style: Abstract, photorealistic, artistic and more
You can also select the specific version of the Midjourney model you want to use, from the original v2 to the advanced v4 with 4 billion parameters. Higher versions produce higher quality images.
Finally, adjust the Model speed to control how quickly the image is generated. Lower speeds provide higher accuracy, while high speeds (~20%) prioritize speed over quality.

Describing images with AI
A unique feature of the Alpha is the ability to get AI-generated descriptions of images. This uses natural language capabilities to analyze an image and describe it in words.
You can upload any image you want, caption it with Midjourney, and tag it automatically. Here’s how:
- Click the plus icon to the left of the prompt bar
- Select “Upload” and choose an image file from your computer
- Once processed, hover over the thumbnail and click the info icon
- Midjourney scans the image and provides a detailed description and tags
This works amazingly well to recognize objects, people, actions and scenes. The AI-created description can even be inserted into a new prompt to modify or build upon that image.

Generate images from images
Speaking of building on existing images, you can insert any image directly into a Midjourney prompt via the Alpha website.
Simply follow the same upload process as above, but instead of asking for a description, copy the URL of the processed image from the right.
Then when entering a new prompt, add:
